DAR celebrates Constitution Week
The Conejo Valley Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution accepted a proclamation commemorating Constitution Week by the city of Westlake Village on Sept. 10 at Westlake Village City Hall City Council Chamber. Chapter Regent Barbara Spiegel accepted the document on behalf of the chapter.
Wed., Sept. 17 begins the national celebration of Constitution Week. In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17 to 23 annually for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The aims of the celebration are to emphasize citizen's responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving it for posterity, informing the people that the Constitution is the basis for America's heritage and encouraging the study of historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.
The DAR placed Constitution Week displays at the Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Newbury Park public libraries. Children and adults are encouraged to read the books on display that chronicle the birth of the document.
The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America's future through better education for children.
