DMV offices to close on Saturdays later this month
      The Department of Motor Vehicles will close all field offices regularly open for Saturday service on Sept. 20 due to the delayed state budget and staffing constraints. The closed offices include those in Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Los Angeles and Van Nuys.

Nordstrom gala better than expected
Patrons paid $100 each, which will go to charities

      Nordstrom was hoping 1,500 customers would pay $100 each to attend its opening gala and be the first inside the newest store at The Oaks mall. Instead about 1,750 excited shoppers turned out. The opening also served as a fundraiser.

T.O. man, 22, killed while on work release

      Funeral services for Christopher Williams, 22, will be Fri., Sept. 12 at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Griffin Memorial Park in Westlake Village. The Thousand Oaks resident was killed on Sept. 4 by a flatbed truck that drove onto the Highway 126 median where Williams was picking up litter.

      Scott Lamp, a heart researcher at UCLA and father of three girls, said he's considered running for school board in the past. But it was the Conejo Valley Unified school board's recent decision to close two elementary schools that gave him the kick he needed.

      What volunteers do: •At Camarillo Hospice about 85 people give time each week to help with office work and assist in patient care. Volunteers organize Hospice's weekly Farmers' Market in Old Town. Ten percent of vendor proceeds are donated to the nonprofit. Hospice hosts a volunteer recognition event each spring.

Semifinalist for national science honor
     ALREADY SHOWING SKILL- Samantha Guhan, a freshman at Newbury Park High School, is the only student from Conejo Valley who placed first in last spring's California State Science Fair. She's one of 300 students nationwide who are semifinalists and will advance to a national competition. Samantha won when she was an eighth-grader at Sycamore Canyon School. Her science fair project deals with fermentation.

This year's book is "What is the What" by Dave Eggers, a novel based on the real-life story of Valentino Achak Deng, one of the lost boys of Sudan who were forced to flee their East African villages during that country's civil war.
