Elks offer scholarships, do good deeds

The Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge No. 2477 offers several college scholarship programs to local students.

The lodge hosts an annual Most Valuable Student scholarship contest with top awards ranging from $4,000 to $60,000 over four years through the Elks National Foundation.

The Elks National Foundation awards more than $3.6 million in scholarships through its three scholarship programs.

Students whose parents or grandparents are Elks members may apply for the Legacy award, a four year $4,000 scholarship.

The Thousand Oaks lodge raises scholarship funds through its sales of tritip barbecued sandwiches.

The Elks support local youth in other ways, through the Americanism and drug awareness essay contests, hoop and soccer shoot contests, and the opportunity for young people to perform community service through the Junior Elks program. Elks are also involved with the Boy and Girl Scouts.

For applications or more information about scholarships and other Elks programs, call the lodge at (805) 496-2477.
