Two public hearings to go before council
      The Thousand Oaks City Council will hold two public hearings during its Tues., Sept. 9 meeting. To help reduce noise problems, the council will consider the planning commission's recommendation to allow fences and walls on properties adjacent to streets with four or more lanes, such as Lynn or Erbes roads, to exceed the current citywide 6-foot height limit.

Water consumer report available
      California Water Service Company sent annual water quality reports, also known as Consumer Confidence Reports (CCR), to customers in their July bills. Customers who receive water service from Cal Water but don't get a bill because it goes to a landlord, homeowners association or employer are encouraged to obtain a copy.

Largest freshman class ever enrolls at CLU
      A record-setting freshman class began the fall semester yesterday at California Lutheran University. CLU expected 500 first-year students, a 12 percent increase over last year. Freshman enrollment has jumped 32 percent in the last five years.

Residents mourn woman who was killed on Lindero Canyon
      Family, friends and members of a saddened community attended funeral services Tuesday to remember the life of Karey Marsh, 46, who was jogging on Lindero Canyon Road last week when she was struck and killed by a motorist.

      The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura will have a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Garden of Hope at 2 p.m. Sun., Sept. 7 at 530 Hampshire Road, Westlake Village. Woman pushes on for guide dog cause after husband's death
      Ben Kendall and his wife, Sheila Scott-Kendall, didn't know July 29 would be their last day together. Kendall had seen his doctor earlier in the day to have his heart checked. Though the certified public accountant seemed in good health, he died unexpectedly that evening. The couple would have celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on Aug. 11.

     PROPER SQUIRREL DIET INCLUDES FRUIT, NOT JUST NUTS- As everyone knows, squirrels are notorious burglars, constantly stealing birdseed from their fellow tree dwellers. Judy Knauer of Newbury Park said this thief stole a pear from her tree and managed to get it to the other side of the yard and up on a wall before eating it. Dieticians would probably agree that squirrels shouldn't live on just nuts and birdseed. County schools select new superintendent
      Stan Mantooth is the new Ventura County superintendent of schools. The county board of education appointed Mantooth on Aug. 16. He took office Sept. 1. "I'm looking forward to it.
