Relay for Life recruits teams
The 11th annual Conejo Valley Relay for Life will take place from 10 a.m. Sat., Oct. 4 to 10 a.m. the next day Sun., Oct. 5 at Newbury Park High School, 456 N. Reino Road, Newbury Park.
The relay benefits the American Cancer Society.
During the event, teams of volunteers take turns walking or running laps for a 24-hour period. While circling the track, volunteers raise funds to provide research, education and treatment to cancer patients.
The event will include a lap of cancer survivors, American Cancer Society information booth, numerous activities throughout the day and the luminaria ceremony at 8 p.m. Saturday, featuring candlelit bags to celebrate survivors and honor those lost to cancer.
The volunteer committee will hold a meeting for team captains and anyone wishing to form a team from 6 to 7 p.m. Tues., Sept. 2 at the Goebel Senior Center, 1385 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.
So far 69 teams are signed up. Relay organizers have a goal to recruit 130 teams of up to 15 people each, recruit 175 cancer survivors to participate in the relay and raise $500,000 for cancer research.
The relay co-chairs are Robert Martins and Ramona Lennehan, both of Thousand Oaks.
The relay theme is "Fighting Cancer Around the World." Teams will choose a country as a theme for decorating their campsites.
Team registration is $100 for youth and $150 for adults.
