Residents warned of property tax scam being sent through the mail
      Ventura County homeowners are receiving officiallooking letters offering to help them lower their property taxes for a fee. A business calling itself "Property Tax Reassessment" says it can assist homeowners with reassessment or adjustment services. The letters have a Los Angeles mailing address or a Ventura County post office box address.

Women's group golfs to 'diva girl' theme
      The Sunset Hills Women's Golf Association staged its annual thematic golf tournament Aug. 12 at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks. This year's theme, "diva girl," was centered around a new board game of the same name, said association member Fran Brough of Simi Valley.

      George A. Jones has joined the board of directors for the Hospice of the Conejo. Jones is a certified senior adviser and owner of the local Home Helpers office. He has been employed with General Motors Corporation, Merrill Lynch, Prudential Securities, and is a consultant to Jones Wall Street which he founded in 1995.

Women return from education peace mission
      Five area women traveled to the island nation of Fiji recently on a mission of education and peace. Calabasas Viewpoint School teachers Caroline Hogg and Deborah McDonald went to the South Pacific on behalf of the organization Global Classrooms for Peace to help Fijian schools incorporate better teaching techniques and implement a more advanced curriculum.

Junior Women's Club raises thousands for Newbury Park horse therapy group
      Westlake Village Junior Women's Club members presented a $15,000 check to Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship on Aug. 9 at the organization's Newbury Park ranch. The donation will be used to replace the flooring in the ranch's stable.

Preparing for Nordstrom opening
     THEY'VE GOT TICKETS TO SELL—Members from the Angels of the Alliance and the Centennial Guild work on reservations for the Sept. 3 Nordstrom Grand Opening Gala. Each ticket sells for $100, and there are 1,500 tickets. Nordstrom is paying for all of the expenses, which means, if they sell out, the two charities will split $150,000.       Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher K. Adams, along with the members of Patrol Squadron 9 (VP-9) "Golden Eagles" stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, recently deployed to Ali Air Base, Iraq. VP-9 replaced Patrol Squadron 47 following its sevenmonth deployment and will assume its sister squadron's mission in Iraq.

Taking the initiative to help others
     BETTER TO GIVE—Ariana Dermand, 12, was inspired by a Thousand Oaks Acorn article about the Manna food bank shortage and decided to do her part to help out. She organized a food drive for Manna with bags donated from local supermarkets and distributed them in her Newbury Park neighborhood. Ariana collected more than 70 bags full of nonperishables and will help Manna further by volunteering to stock their shelves. Ariana is an honors student at Sequoia Middle School.
