Dunn is no friend of Conejo Valley unified schools After reading trustee Mike Dunn's latest rant in the July 31 Thousand Oaks Acorn ("Dunn explains his political position"), it's apparent that he's lost what little grip he had on reality. The people should have the correct facts. Dunn insists on calling Unified Association of Conejo Teachers (UACT) president Susan Falk, now retired, and myself "union bosses." Neither of us is a boss. Instead we work for 1,100 UACT members in the district. You could say we have 1,100 bosses. Dunn apparently believes if he tells a lie often enough, some people will believe it. Dunn has also spread other untruths about us that have previously been published. He likes to perpetuate the misconception that he made one mistake and now he's being victimized. The truth is, the first time he broke the law- the Educational Employment Relations Act- he was asked to cease and desist. He was also asked by thensuperintendent Bob Fraisse to stop. But Dunn repeatedly broke the law over a period of months before UACT was forced to file an unfair labor charge. A few months ago UACT and the district agreed on an informal resolution to this, but Dunn refused to comply. Dunn would rather waste taxpayer dollars on lawyers to drag it on, instead of using the funds in Conejo classrooms. When I joined the Marine Corps in the 1980s, I agreed to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the United States. I took that vow seriously, and I've never broken it. Dunn took the same vow when he became a board member, but, sadly, he hasn't kept his vow. If Dunn has a shred of decency, he should resign from the school board, but he lacks decency, integrity and, most of all, honesty. It's strange that a man who wants to impose a strict religious agenda on children in public schools has such a hard time telling the truth—and refraining from bearing false witness against others. Arleigh Kidd Simi Valley Kidd is executive director of the teachers union. |
