At the Library The Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library has announces events for August. Unless otherwise noted, events take place at the library, 1401 E. Janss Road. For more information, call (805) 4492660 or visit www.toaks.org/library. •Recovering addict and author Craig Farris will present "Surviving Our Drug-Obsessed Culture" at 7 p.m. Mon., Aug. 11. Farris will offer insights into youth drug abuse prevention for teens and parents. He wrote his first book, "Drugs, Kids and Crime," while serving an eightyear sentence in a California prison. The program is free, and after the event, the author will sign copies of his book for those who purchase one. The event will be filmed for inclusion in a documentary. Audience members will be asked to sign a waiver. •The library will host 30minute story times for children entering kindergarten. Story times will be held at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Wed., Aug. 20 at the library. An 11 a.m. story time will be held Thurs., Aug. 21 at the Newbury Park Branch Library, 2331 Borchard Road. The program features stories, rhymes and fingerplays to help ease children's first day jitters. •A centennial celebration for artist Leo Politi will be held Sat., Aug. 23. The event will include sidewalk chalk art for children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., presentations about the artist at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and displays of Politi's work. Politi wrote and illustrated more than 20 children's books. His story "Song of the Swallows" won the Caldecott Medal in 1950. |
