Charity teams with doctor to battle substance abuse
      One of the first physicians to practice in the Conejo Valley is teaming up with a local charity to run a methamphetamine and opiate detoxification clinic. Greg Akrey, 53, started Open Your Arms two years ago after his daughter's recovery from meth addiction.

Officers from Thousand Oaks Police Department will be on the lookout for children doing good deeds
      The Thousand Oaks Police Department, in conjunction with 7-Eleven, is teaming up to reward children for doing good deeds in the community. Deputies are rewarding children who do something helpful, practice safety or deter crime in the community with coupons for a free 12ounce Slurpee from 7-Eleven.

City ups the ante in bicycle safety with sharrows
      That white painting of a bicycle on T.O. Boulevard near the Civic Arts Plaza isn't a chalk outline of a tragic accident. The new marking is called a sharrow, a blended word that combines "share" and "arrow." The symbol is being added to roadways in Thousand Oaks that don't have marked bike lanes.

New prosecutor to help Thousand Oaks
The community prosecutor will give the city more of the tools that are needed to put criminals behind bars
      Dep. District Attorney Bill Redmond, the new community prosecutor for Thousand Oaks, will do his best to keep Thousand Oaks one of the safest cities in the country. In May, Redmond took the post that provides prosecutorial services directly to Thousand Oaks police, residents and businesses.

VCFD gets new spokesperson
      The Ventura County Fire Department has named Capt. Ron Oatman as the department's new spokesperson. He officially began his new duties in July but, until recently, has been assigned to fires in Northern California. Oatman replaces Capt. Barry Parker, who will be returning to his regular firefighting duties at Station 36 in Oak Park.

      During a recent simulation, a teenager with a severed arm lay unconscious among the other injured people scattered on a lawn at California State University Channel Islands on a Friday afternoon. A few feet away sat the wreckage of a school bus, still smoking from a bomb left on board.

Parents and caretakers warned about leaving kids in hot vehicles
      The California Highway Patrol is warning the public of the dangers of leaving a child alone inside a sweltering-hot vehicle. "When left in the sun, it only takes a minute for the inside of the vehicle to become like an oven," said CHP Capt. Whiteford of the Ventura area office.

Motorcyclist critically hurt
      Responding to a traffic crash, authorities from the T.O. Police Department rushed to the intersection of Janss and Moorpark roads at 2 a.m. Mon., Aug. 4 and found a 26yearold Thousand Oaks man unconscious and his motorcycle on fire a short distance away from him.

Rotarians help Many Mansions
      The Thousand Oaks Rotary Club recently presented a $2,500 grant to Many Mansions to support its programs and services for limited-income residents of Ventura County. The club has supported Many Mansions since the early 1990s, contributing more than $40,000 in cash grants and in-kind donations.

Horse show coming to Simi Valley
      A local horse club will host an open horse show, "Show for the Gold," starting 8 a.m. Sat. and Sun., Aug. 30 and 31 at Arroyo Simi Equestrian Center, 3495 Chicory Lane, Simi Valley. Aug. 30 is the all-English show with classes for three age divisions, and flat and jumping classes for every skill level.

      Hospice of the Conejo is a nonprofit organization that helps people with end-of-life needs and offers bereavement services for those who desire them. When she heard about Hospice's Youth Bereavement Program, Pamm Deluca of Simply Ceramics in Thousand Oaks offered children in the program an opportunity to come to her store and paint tiles free of charge.
