Affordable housing ordinance passed by City Council

Though the City Council often refers to Thousand Oaks as being at build-out with little land left to be developed, it amended the municipal code by creating new affordable housing programs that will require developers in Thousand Oaks to include affordable housing units or pay a fee.

The new ordinance, which will affect only property with six or more units, was passed at the July 22 council meeting.

Ten percent of the new units will be required to be affordable. The affordable units can be 20 percent smaller and have lowercost interiors than the other units. Alternatively, an in-lieu fee can be paid to a trust fund the city will use to provide affordable housing.
