Neighborhood dysfunction causes problems in normally peaceful Waverly Heights
      Accusations of unleashed dogs roaming the streets, people owning too many horses and neighbors making death threats are only some of the troubles that brought residents of the Waverly Heights community to the City Council to ask for help.

Citizen Academy is seeking applicants
      The Thousand Oaks Police Department is offering its 23rd Citizen Academy starting Wed., Sept. 3. Classes are held each Wednesday for 12 weeks from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Thousand Oaks Police Station, 2101 E. Olsen Road. The curriculum offers an opportunity for residents to get an in-depth look at local law enforcement and its diverse operations.

Alleged child molestor arrested
      Thousand Oaks resident Dennis Bordelon, 58, was arrested on July 24 on suspicion of child molestation and was booked for lewd acts upon a child. He's now in the pre-trial detention facility with bail set at $500,000.

Three law enforcement veterans are promoted in sheriff's department
      The Ventura County Sheriff's Department recently announced the promotions of three veterans of the department effective Aug. 10. Cmdr. Marty Rouse will be promoted to chief deputy; Capt. Guy Stewart will be promoted to commander, and Sgt. Bill Ayub will be promoted to captain.

Woman from Newbury Park surrenders to D.A.
      The Ventura County District Attorney's office announced last week that Cherie Lou Duval, 40, of Newbury Park was arrested on felony charges of embezzlement, grand theft auto and false impersonation of another. Duval, while working as the president of the Coalition to End Family Violence, allegedly embezzled funds and a vehicle between July 2003 and February 2008.

Affordable housing ordinance passed by City Council
      Though the City Council often refers to Thousand Oaks as being at build-out with little land left to be developed, it amended the municipal code by creating new affordable housing programs that will require developers in Thousand Oaks to include affordable housing units or pay a fee.

      The Best Western Thousand Oaks Inn has received the Best Western Director's Award for outstanding quality standards. The award recognizes hotels in the chain which score in the top 20 percent of all 2,400 North American properties in cleanliness and maintenance.

Apply now for city grants that support community events
      Community nonprofit organizations may apply for city of Thousand Oaks Community Events Endowment Fund grants during the annual application period between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30. The city sets aside $100,000 each year to award to local nonprofit organizations for arts and other events that benefit organizations within the city or help to promote the city.

Judge named to superior court by Schwarzenegger
      Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed Ellen Gay Conroy to a judgeship in Ventura Superior Court. She was among 30 superior court judicial appointments made recently in 13 counties. Conroy has served as a commissioner with the Ventura Superior Court since March 2006. Prior to that, she owned Creative Dissolution Family Law Mediation from 2002 to 2003.

Church raising funds to fix pipe organ
      Ascension Lutheran Church is raising funds to complete the installation of the church's Reuter Opus 2087 pipe organ. In 1989 when the organ was installed in the sanctuary on Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks, the congregation lacked funds to build it to the complete specs as desired. Many pipes are still missing from the instrument's middle range.

Workshop offers counseling to teen girls
      The nonprofit organization Girl's Empowerment Center is hosting a workshop for teenage girls from 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Aug. 11 to 22. The workshop, aimed at counseling girls from 13 to 18, will be at the Girl's Empowerment Center, 2500 Townsgate Road, Ste. H, in Westlake Village.
