Local church was a great place to be on July Fourth

Having grandsons with me over the Fourth of July posed an opportunity to seek some active celebration site for saluting America.

As luck would have it, we headed up to Bethany Baptist Church on the hill in Thousand Oaks. Rumor had it that it was "the place to be" on July Fourth. Indeed, it was!

The 7-year-old enjoyed a ride on the ponies, cavorting with the animals in the petting zoo, Jolly Jumping until his bones rattled and then belly slamming on the slip and slide- - all for free.

The 13-year-old found some pal to chat with, scarfed down several delicious hamburgers, and enjoyed roaming the area.

The crowd was happy and friendly, so when I lost contact with both boys for about 15 minutes, my worries were minor, as minor as a grandmother in charge could possibly be.

At dusk, we were all perched on the edge of the hillside, ready for the light show, and a colorful display lighted up the night sky.

Thank you, Thousand Oaks! Even the sideline fire stirred some excitement.

So, my applause to you, Bethany Baptist, for serving the people of your community in such a family-fun way. The fact that I didn't have to reach for my wallet at each activity was an astounding pleasure.

The Boy Scouts did a terrific job with their helpful stations.

My grandsons and I have fond memories and a little mustard on our shirts from your excellent Fourth of July event. Sherrill Hyink Thousand Oaks
