Commuters can get Caltrans updates on their cellphones

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), in partnership with NBC4 and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is providing realtime traffic information to Los Angeles area motorists via cellphones.

The free service will display more than 270 traffic cameras, half of which are operated by Caltrans and made available through Metro's Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems Network.

Users can download the application by entering their mobile number on the NBC Los Angeles Traffic Cam link at KNBC.com or by calling (877) NBC-LA04 (622-5204). A text message is then sent providing the link to download and install the application.

Information is displayed in fullmotion video or uptothesecond still photos. Favorite routes can be stored and retrieved by pushing a single button.

Motorists are advised to access their information before getting on the road in compliance with the new cellphone safety law.
