Appointments made to city of T.O. Youth Commission Seven high-achieving teens were appointed to the Thousand Oaks Youth Commission by the City Council on June 24. The Youth Commission serves as an advisory body to the council on all matters dealing with young people. The group also helps plan several events, including the Youth Recognition Awards, "Rock the Oaks!" and a therapeutic dance. "Rock the Oaks!" gives local rock bands an opportunity to showcase their original music and gain exposure to the public at a major venue. It also offers a professional concert experience to local teens. The therapeutic dance provides a fun evening for disabled young people. Thousand Oaks High School senior Alex Johnson was reappointed to serve a one-year term, and TOHS junior Sean McMinn was reappointed to serve a twoyear term. Newly appointed to serve two-year terms were TOHS freshman Lindsey DeMint, Westlake High School sophomore Hanna Hong, Newbury Park High School freshman Jacob Kohlhepp, Colina Middle School eighth-grader Effie Sklavenitis and Trinity Pacific Christian School sophomore Amanda Young. Before coming to TOHS Lindsey served on the yearbook staff and school site council at her middle school and has been involved in church and volleyball. "I'm not afraid to take charge of situations, and I converse with people very easily," DeMint wrote on her application to the commission. A member of the WHS swim team, Hanna has volunteered at Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital and enjoys ballet dancing. Jacob has worked on his school's yearbook staff and as a peer tutor. "God gave me and others talents to not just benefit ourselves, but to benefit others," he wrote in his application. Sean is involved in associated student government and journalism at TOHS. Effie has helped the less fortunate by collecting used clothing, books and baking pies. "I believe there are endless ways to help others and make the world a better place," she said in her application. Collecting items to support soldiers in distant countries and children in need have been among the ways Amanda has volunteered her time. Alex is a member of the Key Club, Spanish Club and Red Cross Club. The Youth Commission is composed of 13 teens from Thousand Oaks and two adult advisers. Applications to be on the commission numbered 38 this year. The report submitted to the council by council members Tom Glancy and Andy Fox said, "All candidates were exemplary." |
