Appointments made to city of T.O. Youth Commission

      Seven high-achieving teens were appointed to the Thousand Oaks Youth Commission by the City Council on June 24. The Youth Commission serves as an advisory body to the council on all matters dealing with young people. The group also helps plan several events, including the Youth Recognition Awards, "Rock the Oaks!" and a therapeutic dance.

Magnet school approved

      To attract more students to Conejo Valley Unified School District and to offer parents a choice in alternate teaching styles, the CVUSD Board of Education approved creation of a science and technology magnet school in Newbury Park in 2009.

Elmer Johnson,
former Northern California Educator
      Westlake Village resident Elmer Johnson passed away June 5, 2008, shortly after being diagnosed with leukemia. He was 87. Mr. Johnson was born November 22, 1920 in Horton, Iowa. He was the youngest school superintendent in the state of Iowa. In 1946, he married his beloved Gertrude ("Trudy") Kitchen with whom he shared 62 wonderful years.

Local girl is state finalist
      Kristen Spear, 11, of Thousand Oaks has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss California Pageant to be held Aug. 14 to 16 at the Hyatt in Anaheim. The pageant is for girls ages 10 through 12. The winner will be eligible to compete in the national pageant at Disneyland.

The CVARC conducted a field day in Thousand Oaks on Saturday as part of a national effort in which clubs operated radio equipment and generators to communicate across America.       Air Force ROTC Cadet Stephen A. Snelling has received an Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship for $15,000 per year of attendance at the University of Washington at Seattle. He is the son of Daniel and Shari Snelling of Thousand Oaks and a 2006 graduate of Oaks Christian High School.

Going to jail
     IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers NOT A GOOD PLACE TO LAND- Boy Scout Michael Larsen, 11, of Troop No. 765, lands in jail during Ventura County's second annual Monopoly tournament at St. Paschal Baylon Church in Thousand Oaks. Money raised last Saturday will help Boy Scout troops in Thousand Oaks and go to a college fund for disadvantaged teens.
