Local schools may win fitness battle
      Jake Steinfeld, chair of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, has announced that Apollo High School in Simi Valley, Balboa Middle School in Ventura and University Preparation School in Camarillo are three of the 75 schools statewide that have been named finalists in the council's 2008 Governor's Challenge Competition.

      State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell has offered his top 10 suggestions to help parents keep their children active and productive during summer vacation. "This is a tough year for families because rising costs are forcing many of us to stay close to home and look for free or inexpensive things to do," said O'Connell.

      California Lutheran University's music department is offering a summer vocal institute for teens ages 12 to 18. The program begins with an orientation on Sun., July 6 and ends with a performance on Sat., July 12.

Leadership academy accepting applications
      The Ventura County Leadership Academy is accepting applications for participation in Class XIV for the 2008-09 program year. Participation is open to anyone living or working in Ventura County. Teachers earn Impact II awards
      Moorpark High School instructors Ginger Brandenburg and Donna Fulgham, along with Lucia Lemieux, a teacher at Los Cerritos Middle School in Thousand Oaks, earned the top awards at the 16th annual 2008 Impact II teacher recognition dinner held in May at the Courtyard Marriott in Oxnard.
