Southern Baptisttrained disaster relief volunteers are serving round-the-clock in areas devastated by recent flooding in the Midwest. So far, Southern Baptists have logged more than 3,000 volunteer hours and prepared more than 95,000 hot meals for flood victims.

Southern Baptists have moved in recovery and "mud out" teams to help make flooded homes habitable again. Nineteen teams are serving in Wisconsin and 20 in Iowa. Teams are also active in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.

In addition to the immediate response, Southern Baptists are preparing a long-term strategy to help homeowners rebuild.

"This is going to cover a much wider area than a hurricane, so we are preparing for a significant long-term rebuilding effort," said Terry Henderson, national director for Southern Baptist disaster relief operations.

Southern Baptists work with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and the Federal Emergency Management Agency in disaster situations. The denomination has more than 83,000 trained disaster relief volunteers and more than 1,500 disaster relief units.

National Southern Baptist disaster relief efforts are coordinated by the North American Mission Board, SBC, in Alpharetta, Ga.
