Westlake High graduateits largest class ever
      With the green and brown of the Santa Monica Mountains as a backdrop, 552 seniors filed into Warrior Stadium last Thursday afternoon. Some waved to the capacity crowd as they took their seats; others were strictly business.

Senior overcomes the odds to graduate from Westlake
      Juan Santos is an unsung hero of the Westlake High School Class of 2008. He came to Thousand Oaks from Mexico as an eighth-grader and spoke virtually no English. Despite the language barrier and cultural differences, Juan graduated last Thursday night with a B+ average.

Yellow roses again have special significance during La Reina High School commencement
      The yellow rose holds special meaning for the graduates of La Reina High School. The young women first received one at a welcome tea held in their first days at school. They wore one at a Mass during their junior year when presented with their class rings.

She excelled despite disabilities
      "Pray for the baby who was born too soon" is the opening line to a poem that Katherine Meyer's mother dedicated to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Tarzana Medical Center. On Dec. 7, 1989, Katherine Meyer was born two months premature. Because of her undeveloped lungs, she was immediately put on a high-pressure respirator.

      As seniors gathered behind the school's stadium last Thursday evening, Kaytie Smith stood among her fellow Thousand Oaks High School graduates feeling- like most of her peers- mixed emotions. TOHS senior exemplifies all that's good with young people of today
      Every high school graduating class has its bad boys, mean girls, science wizards, computer geeks, star athletes and popular kids. They also have lots of amazing young people who are just plain nice. Ariel Downs represents the nicest of the nice, a person who stands by her convictions and volunteers her time to a variety of causes, principal Tim Carpenter said.

Newbury Park High School graduates are stronger and closer after a year marked by grief

Largest classes ever graduate from Conejo Valley, Century high schools
      The largest graduating class in the history of Century and Conejo Valley high schools took the stage last week when 106 students marched to the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance." Of the 175 graduates from the two schools, 106 walked June 12.

Westlake Women's Club awards scholars
      The Scholarship Committee of Westlake Women's Club distributed $20,000 in scholarship funds and music awards to graduating seniors from the seven Conejo Valley high schools and communication schools. The awards this year include a new scholarship, which was presented to Angelina Vitto of Newbury Park High School.

      Mark Elswick has been named president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Conejo and Las Virgenes. Elswick comes to the club after spending nearly 16 years in leadership positions at YMCA branches throughout Southern California.

Thousand Oaks man earns law degree
      Kent Darroch Young of Thousand Oaks received a juris doctor degree during the spring commencement in May from the Michigan State University College of Law. The law school conferred 282 JD degrees during the commencement ceremonies held at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts on the university campus.
