Ageism alive and well in America- and in our county Lately, in most cases when you apply for a job, you're told to apply online and then you never hear from anyone. They never call you in to sit down and find out more about your business background. For example, I traveled all over the United States and Western Canada, stayed at the best hotels, entertained clients and worked with numerous top executives, both at the client level and with their advertising agencies, selling space for the Hearst Magazine Division. But I'm having great difficulty finding work, and that's because I'm retired and a senior citizen. Unfortunately, what these companies don't understand is that most of us senior citizens are good workers and we have developed extremely good work ethics over the years. Yes, there are companies that do hire those of us who are over age 60, but they're few and far between. Also, they do have a way of finding out how old you are just by asking what year you graduated from college. I also have a background in retail; recently I worked at Macy's and Robinsons-May, and won all kinds of awards and certificates. Does it matter? No, it doesn't. Nothing matters unless you're under 50 years old. It's pathetic but true: age works against you in this country, and particularly in Ventura County. Arthur Ninness Thousand Oaks |
