Home sales in Conejo Valleremain sluggish
      May sales of Conejo Valley singlefamily homes totaled 110. This compares to 113 sold in April and 134 a year ago, according to Patti Hepple, president of the Conejo Valley Association of Realtors. Median sales price for single-family homes in May was $688,680; in May 2007, it was $828,571.

Meeting to address new anti-smoking law

Anti-DUI efforts are paying off, CHP says
      The California Highway Patrol's "Statewide Driving Under the Influence Reduction Effort" grant has concluded. Under the $5-million project, CHP personnel were deployed on an overtime basis with the mission of removing impaired drivers from California's roadways.

Collects a scholarship
     READY FOR COLLEGE- Morgan McLeod of Newbury Park High School collects a $2,000 William and Cynthia Fairburn Memorial Scholarship. It's awarded to seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who'll be attending a four-year university studying liberal arts, humanities or science. The Ventura County Community Foundation handed out 354 scholarships on June 5 at the Ventura County Office of Education. William Fairburn was the son of a former Columbia University professor. Cynthia Fairburn's parents were professors at St. Paul's College in Tarsus, Turkey, where she was born. The Fairburns retired in Ojai, read voraciously and believed the finest heritage to leave to children is an education.

Fresh berries help cool down summer
      In the past, eating raspberries and blackberries meant picking fruit from thorny bushes. Today, reaping the berry harvest means nothing more than a trip to a farmers market or grocery store. Cooked, raw or frozen, blackberries and raspberries seem like miracle foods.

Two office buildings change hands in T.O.
      The Ventura County office of CB Richard Ellis recently sold two commercial buildings in Thousand Oaks with a combined size of more than 184,000 square feet. The buildings, at 1011 Rancho Conejo Road and 2300 Corporate Center Drive, were sold as part of an investment sale by the Wood Family Trust to First Industrial Acquisitions, LLC.

Residents learn about Chumash homes
     JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers TELLING HISTORY- Stagecoach Inn Museum volunteer Babette Winzelberg shares stories about the Chumash tribe inside the frame of a Chumash shelter. After months of connecting and tightening the wood supports, the ap walls will be completed by Chumash representatives and an archaeologist next week. Chumash dwellings were made from bent willow poles arranged in a semicircle and covered with surf grass. A roof opening allowed smoke to escape when food was prepared inside due to rain. Most measured about 20 feet in diameter, but the chief's was at least 15 feet larger.

Teen Fire Academy opens
      The Ventura County Fire Department will host its annual Junior Fire Academy for teens ages 13 to 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday. The academy is being offered on the weeks of June 23 to 27, July 7 to 11 and July 14 to 18.

      Arby's is holding a community fundraiser to raise money and awareness for youth mentoring. Through Mon., June 30, customers who visit Arby's restaurants in Thousand Oaks and Ventura may donate $1 and sign a "Help Us Help Kids" pinup to hang on the wall of the restaurant. Money raised will support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County.

Fillmore Wine Train goes through valley
      The Fillmore & Western Railroad presents the Wine Train traveling from 7 to 10 p.m. Sat., July 5, departing from Central Park in downtown Fillmore. The Wine Train will provide guests with wine tastings of three of the four wines provided by Rabbit Ridge Winery in Paso Robles served in a souvenir Fillmore & Western wine glass.
