Contractors give out scholarships

The Ventura County Contractor's Association recently awarded $12,000 in scholarships to students pursuing education for a career in the construction industry. Additionally, six students received $5,000 in scholarship awards from the local chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction.

All recipients are residents of Ventura County and attended local high schools. Individuals were selected by the VCCA Construction Education Committee based on goals for a career in education, enrollment in an accredited college, vocational or trade school, transcripts and grade-point average, and moral and leadership qualities.

This year's scholarship recipients are:

Charles Hengehold- construction management

Omar Hernandez- diesel technology

Leon Hordijk- landscape architecture

Kassy Morris- construction management

Donald Nielson- urban planning

Oscar Nino- architecture

Cristal Vasquez- mechanical engineering

Andrew Wright- architecture

Winners of the NAWIC scholarships were Julianna Colwell, Katherine KurzweilMatt Olsen, Ian Reynolds, Digo Silva and Eric Torres.
