Oaks Christian seniors live up to the school's motto

      Oaks Christian School's motto, "Preparing minds for leadership and hearts for service," was a theme that carried throughout the school's June 5 commencement in Westlake Village. It was visible in the gift the senior class presented to the school.

Honors given at CLU
      The Honors Day Convocation at California Lutheran University on May 16 highlighted the scholastic achievements of several students. New members elected for the Scholastic Honor Society include Carmen Gonzalez, a psychology major from Simi Valley, and Kristina Klug, a math major from Simi Valley. The society is the highest academic honor at CLU.

N.P. resident graduates from Rhodes
      Caleb Standafer III of Newbury Park graduated at the 159th commencement exercises of Rhodes College. Rhodes president William E. Troutt presided over the ceremony held in Fisher Garden on the school's Memphis, Tenn., campus.

At Weathersfield Elementary School, learning is fun when you're 'knighted'
     A DRAGON SLAYER- Weathersfield Elementary School student Kylee LaRue, 8, whacks a piñata dragon following a knighting ceremony at Conejo Creek Park North. Throughout the year, second- grade teacher Peter Joel teaches students about the journey to Intelligence Castle. The young scholars fight off Math Dragons, Paragraph Dragons and other beasts while collecting Dragon Dollars for making smart choices and completing good deeds. Contractors give out scholarships
      The Ventura County Contractor's Association recently awarded $12,000 in scholarships to students pursuing education for a career in the construction industry. Additionally, six students received $5,000 in scholarship awards from the local chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction.

Numerous Thousand Oaks residents make dean's list
      Dana DiProspero of Thousand Oaks is listed on the 2008 spring semester dean's list at the University of Portland. DiProspero is a senior majoring in secondary education. Students need at least a 3.5 grade-point average to make the dean's list.

Johns Hopkins recognizes T.O. student
      Thousand Oaks resident Joshua Rose, a student at Madrona Elementary School, was recently honored at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted children held by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Joshua was invited to the ceremony based on his performance on the SCAT, an above-grade-level test given to second- through sixth-grade participants.

Making music for Acacia
     JOE BINOYA/Acorn Newspapers PERFORMING- Samantha Fischer, 10, of Acacia Elementary School smiles as she catches a glimpse of a relative watching her and 11-year-old Kayla Milligan, left, as they sing "La Bamba." The performance took place during the recent grand opening of the Acacia Elementary School Music Tech Lab in Thousand Oaks. The new music lab includes donated instruments such as a banjo, conga drums and electric keyboard, and also has a sound booth and an in-house recording studio. Several Acacia students performed at the event.
