Flag Day history

How did Flag Day, the patriotic holiday between Memorial and Independence days, come to be?

Congress enacted its Flag Resolution on June 14, 1777, calling for the establishment of a national banner. Seamstress Betsy Ross is said to have contributed to the design. Today the flag has 13 red and white stripes to represent the 13 original colonies and a blue field on which each of the 50 states is represented by a star.

On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson made a presidential proclamation declaring the anniversary of Flag Resolution Day, June 14, as Flag Day. On Aug. 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 as National Flag Day.

Everyone is asked to display their flags on Flag Day to show honor to the starspangled banner.
