The Newbury Park High School chamber and concert choirs both earned first place awards at the Heritage Music Festival in Seattle recently.

The NPHS Choral Music Department won the Spirit of Seattle Award and was named best representative of its community. The group of about 75 students also won the adjudicator's choice award, and the boy's tenor and basses won the special maestro award.

The honors included an invitation to participate in a special Gold Festival next year.

Alicia Gerrard, a senior in the concert choir, said, "We weren't expecting it. We thought we'd win a few, but as long as I've been in choir- since freshman year- we've never won that many awards. Our choir was really excited and ecstatic.

"There was a really high energy. We were hugging each other, and we were really thrilled and really happy. It's a good recognition."

Both the chamber singers and full concert choir will present their end-of-the-year concerts tonight and Friday at the Newbury Park High School Performing Arts Center. Under the direction of John Sargent, the concert will feature both classical and contemporary numbers.

The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Newbury Park High School is at 456 Reino Road.
