Area ballplayers feeling a draft Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft begins today at 11 a.m. from Disney's Milk House in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The first day of the two-day event will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and MLB.com. Several area players could have their names called during the proceedings, most notably Westlake High's Cutter Dykstra, Shane Kroker and Graham Johnson, all of whom are ranked in Baseball America's top 200 prospect list. Brett Hunter, a Pepperdine junior and Moorpark High grad, is ranked No. 51 on the list of available pitchers. Matt Magill, a hardthrowing right-hander from Royal, is the No. 171rated pitching prospect in the country, according to Baseball America. At 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, Thousand Oaks catcher Jett Bandy has the tools many scouts are looking for. - Stephen Dorman |
