Eagle Scout completes project

Mitch Engelking, a Boy Scout in Troop No. 754 of Newbury Park, recently partnered with the Conejo Recreation and Park District to complete his Eagle Scout project. The project is a major requirement for attaining Eagle Scout rank.

Mitch's project features a Fitness Trail Guide and distance markers at Pepper Tree Playfield in Newbury Park.

The project was planned and implemented by Mitch, a junior at Newbury Park High School. He completed the preparatory work in six months and then led a crew of 48 people in the construction and installation.

The total project cost was more than $600. Funds were raised through donations from Newbury Park Rotary Club and the local Elks Lodge 2477, Roadside Lumber and Hardware Inc., Home Depot and Kelvin Atherton.

The Pepper Tree Fitness Trail consists of a 0.83-mile loop. Markers are placed every one-eighth of a mile along the loop. The information is displayed on a sign at the entrance to the park.
