It's fire season
      Ventura County Fire Department is advising residents to act now to protect their homes from the threat of wildfires. Structures in wildland/urban interface zones are at particular risk from wildfires. The deadline to complete weed abatement on Ventura County properties is Sun., June 1.

      The city of Thousand Oaks has completed its annual audit of outstanding credit balances on closed utility bill accounts. Wake up. That sentence may not be the most exciting ever written, but it could mean cash coming in the mail for more of those who overpaid the city in the first place.

      The Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks is hosting a Celebrity Golf Tournament on Mon., June 23 at Moorpark Country Club.       HIGH FLYER- Jessica Lieberman, a 14-year-old Agoura Hills resident and a student at Agoura High, competes on the balance beam at the Level 8 Regional Women's Gymnastics Championships last month at the Long Beach Convention Center. Jessica, who trains at Victory Gymnastics Academy in Newbury Park, placed fourth on the beam, but took first in floor exercise.

      More than 8,000 books have been collected as part of a major book drive, and kids from Redwood Middle School played a big part in reaching that number. The local collection, organized by the Westlake Village/ Sunrise Rotary Club, is part of an international book drive that will culminate at the Rotary International Convention next month in Los Angeles.

Death of a teen attributed to high blood alcohol
      A blood alcohol level of 0.18, more than double the 0.08 level for an automatic drunken driving conviction, was found in Cody Murphy, 17, the Newbury Park High School junior who was killed last month in the singlevehicle crash of the car he was driving in Malibu, said Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Traffic Sgt. Philip Brooks.
