      Admit rates at many University of California campuses reached record lows this year, but the numbers at private institutions have also been dramatic. Yale's applications increased 18 percent over last year, and the acceptance rate dipped to a new low of 8.3 percent.

Anniversary celebrated at dance studio
      ON THEIR TOES- Members of the Paiva Dance Academy celebrate their first anniversary in the studio, 2636 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. The academy held an open house, which included hors d'oeuvres and dance exhibitions by students and teachers. Owner Betty Lim and director Jorge Visconti participated. Young tuba player earns distinction
      COME BLOW YOUR HORN- Thousand Oaks resident and Civil Air Patrol cadet Frank Sefton, 14, plays tuba last Friday night, May 9, at Moorpark College with the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest. The band was invited to perform at the college's Grandeur of Winds, Intimacy of Chamber Music event.

Auditions being held for summer theater camp
      Stages Performing Arts, a nonprofit summer theater camp for children ages 7 through 15, will present "The Music Man Jr." on July 24 to 26 at the Smothers Theatre at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Auditions for the camp will be by appointment in Newbury Park on Sat., May 31 and Sun., June 1.
