Oxnard will celebrate big red berries

The 25th annual California Strawberry Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sat., May 17 and Sun., May 18 in Oxnard. Free onsite parking is available at Strawberry Meadows of College Park, 3250 S. Rose Ave.

The festival began in 1984 as a tribute to the agricultural industry. It now ranks among the top outdoor festivals in the nation and has given close to $3 million in charitable contributions.

The event will include strawberrybased foods such as strawberry pizza, strawberry shortcake, strawberry nachos and chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Live entertainment will be provided, including headliners Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Saturday and The E Family featuring Sheila E on Sunday.

Other highlights include the strawberry promenade with cooking and decorating demonstrations, 300 arts and crafts booths, Budweiser Clydesdales, Strawberryland for Kids with rides and attractions, contests and the Star Berry Hunt.

General admission is $12. Seniors ages 55 and older will be admitted for $8, and children ages 5 to 12 are $5. Children 4 and under are free.
