Nonsurgical alternative for fibroids
Thousand Oaks Radiology Group and Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center are providing a nonsurgical procedure called uterine fibroid embolization for women with symptomatic fibroids. This procedure is a minimally invasive, rapid recovery alternative to hysterectomy.
About 25 million women in the United States suffer from uterine fibroids- noncancerous growths that cause heavy bleeding and pelvic pain. Between 30 to 50 percent of women over age 40 have fibroid-related symptoms, some so debilitating that their quality of life is diminished.
For decades, the most common treatment for symptomatic fibroids was a hysterectomy, removal of the uterus. About 30 percent of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed in the U.S. each year are for fibroids.
Uterine fibroid embolization is performed by interventional radiologists and is covered by Medicare and most private insurance companies.
Thousand Oaks Radiology Group interventional radiologists, Catherine A Moses, MD; Ilya Lekht, MD; and Charles Hennemeyer, MD, perform UFE at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center.
