Man sentenced for embezzling Amgen
      Jason Rimmer, 37, of San Mateo was recently sentenced to two years in state prison for embezzling more than $300,000 from Amgen Inc. of Thousand Oaks.

      A volunteer group called Californians Organized to Rescue Education (CORE) and the 12th district PTA took to the streets to express their grievances with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed education budget cuts. On Fri., April 25, members of CORE and the regional PTA branch demonstrated outside state Sen. Tom McClintock's Thousand Oaks office.

      Walk to Defeat ALS, an effort to raise funds benefiting research and patient care services for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, will take place Sun., May 4 at Plaza Park in Ventura. Commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, 5,600 new cases of ALS are diagnosed annually.

      The California Strawberry Festival Gala will be held at 6:30 p.m. Fri., May 9 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 600 E. Esplanade Drive, Oxnard. Group wants to match mentors to foster kids
      A volunteer group wants to match mentors with young women aging out of the county's foster care system and is asking agencies capable of sustaining such a program to step forward. The 70-member United Women's Leadership Council wants organizations to submit proposals to the United Way of Ventura County between April 21 and May 23.

Helping less fortunate children
