Local students have been named Climate Champions Adam Raudonis of Westlake High School and Arielle Gillman of Oak Park High School have been named Climate Champions of California. They were two of only 15 honorees in the entire state. California's Climate Champions will educate their peers, fellow students and communities on climate change and ways to reduce carbon emissions. Most Climate Champions usually emphasize efficient use of energy, recycling and carpooling. "These amazing, inspirational teens have rightfully accepted global warming as the challenge of their generation, and they want to lead the charge on solutions," said Mary Nichols, chair of the state's Air Resources Board. The program was based on a similar program in the United Kingdom that's sponsored by the British Council. Students were judged after interviews. Criteria included knowledge of the topic, enthusiasm to cause change and communication skills. The 15 winners are expected to participate in a "climate camp" this summer. |
