Listening is vital for parents
      For a parent, knowing one's children are safe, happy and emotionally sound is a concern. A parent would want to be the first to know if their child is being traumatized by something at school or worse. Persontoperson communication is important for a child to feel able to confide in his or her parents.

School closure protests continue
     WANT UNIVERSITY TO STAY OPEN- Emma and Zoe Ballen of University Elementary School, like other kids and parents in Conejo Valley Unified School District, are demonstrating to keep their school open. "The school closure issue is difficult for everyone, but can be especially stressful for the children," writes their mom, Amy Ballen. "They are learning that it is okay to stand up for what you believe in." Parents and children may be relieved when the school board is expected to make a final decision on which schools will close on March 18.

      The Westlake High School Instrumental Music Boosters will host a Regional Drumline Competition from 1 to 9 p.m. Sat., March 15 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sun., March 16 at the school gymnasium, 100 N. Lakeview Canyon Road, Westlake Village.

Career fair set for tonight at Hyatt Westlake
      Conejo Valley Unified School District will host a Career Fair for all students in grades eight through 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thurs., March 6 in the grant ballroom at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza, 880 S. Westlake Blvd.

Thousand Oaks resident is new leader at Montclair school
      Thousand Oaks resident Dr. Mike McDonnell was recently appointed as executive director and head of school for Montclair College Prep, a nondenominational private institution for grades six to 12 in Van Nuys. McDonnell replaces the late Dr. Vernon Simpson, headmaster, who also founded the school in 1956.

Brighter Horizons will be presented at Cal Lutheran
      Brighter Horizons 2008 will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Sat., March 8 at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Brighter Horizons is a halfday conference designed for students in grades five through nine, providing them a chance to learn about career opportunities in math, science and technology.

'Pi' Night coming to Sequoia
      Sequoia Middle School Math Department will host the annual "Pi" Night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Fri., March 14 at the school, 2855 Borchard Road, Newbury Park. Activities include math games and educational activities for the whole family.
