New film shows the skills of moviemaking
      Making a film, whether it's a lowbudget picture, a studio production with a large budget or a no-budget movie made in the filmmaker's backyard, is a difficult task because there are so many elements that must come together for the piece to work. If one ingredient is sour, the entire picture is in jeopardy.

      Come February, finding a good film can be difficult. Juxtaposed between the holiday blockbusters and the spring hopefuls, more often than not we're left with a potpourri of mediocrity. Now and then a happy little surprise emerges, although the fanatical popcorn junkie may be better off seeing those lingering Christmas remnants for the umpteenth time.

Open juried art show set to run in Newbury Park, opens March 18
      Westlake Village Art Guild's open juried art show will run Tues., March 18 through Sun., April 13 at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery, 2331 Borchard Road in Newbury Park. Take-in for artwork is from noon to 4 p.m. Sat., March 15.
