New development is overrated if tax revenue decides it

I read Nancy Needham's article in the Feb. 7 issue of the Thousand Oaks Acorn with interest. It seems that our city government is constantly pushing for a bigger tax base--"more revenue, more revenue"--it sounds like a broken record.

Has there ever been a study to determine the relationship between the added revenue and the additional costs associated with the increased development?

My guess is that the added costs, such as additional services, street and other maintenance and repair, more fire and police personnel and equipment, etc., would absorb the added revenue; it would be a zero-sum game with the result being a diminished quality of life for our residents and small businesses.

So what if the Do-it Center is acting in its self-interest by promoting the initiative? Irrespective of the motives of the promoters, I think that unfettered development, which our city manager seems to be advocating, is destructive to our community. Bernard Lemlech Westlake Village
