Teen artists sought for InnerSpark summer camp in Valencia

The California State Summer School for the Arts (InnerSpark) invites high school-aged visual, literary, media and performing artists to apply for selection as California Arts Scholars.

The scholars will attend the 22nd annual summer arts program on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia from July 14 through Aug. 11.

The 520 students accepted for InnerSpark will spend four weeks studying and working with professional artists, writers and performers of national stature. The scholars who complete the program will receive three units of California State University course credit.

InnerSpark offers instruction in animation, music, dance, film and video, theater, creative writing and the visual arts.

The school has conducted summer sessions since 1987, and more than 9,500 teens have attended the program.

Alumni of the program include actor James Franco ("Spiderman" movies), Craig McCracken ("The Powerpuff Girls" creator), Dakila Davina (Parade magazine managing editor), Sharon Grimsley Teague(Houston Ballet principal soloist), Sophie Buhai (fashion designer), Katherine McPhee ("American Idol" finalist) and actress Kirsten Vangsness ("Criminal Minds" TV series).

California students whose families have the means to pay are charged a comprehensive fee of $1,415 to cover room, board and tuition for the summer session. Financial aid is available, and no student is denied admission solely on financial ability.
