Five arrests made in shooting death of Newbury Park man Five residents of Thousand Oaks have been arrested in connection with the Nov. 4 killing of Newbury Park resident Juan Nabte, 20. Luis Lima, 23, and a 17yearold male juvenile were charged with homicide. Fernando Chaclan, 19, Edgar Martinez, 18, and Jennifer Patino, 19, were also arrested. Each of the three teenagers named is suspected of being an accessory to homicide. Nabte was shot in the head as he stood outside his home in the 500 block of Avenida del Platino. He was pronounced dead at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center the next day, Nov. 5, at about 2 p.m. All of the suspects are believed to be connected to the Mara Salvatrucha gang, also known as MS13, an international gang brought to Los Angeles about 20 years ago by Salvadoran immigrants. "We believe the suspects are a part of a clique or faction of this very violent gang known for its trademark violence, terror, murder and disrespect for law enforcement," said Capt. Jerry Hernandez, spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. There are fewer than 10 known MS13 gang members in Thousand Oaks and now five of them are in jail, added Thousand Oaks Police Chief Dennis Carpenter. Sheriff's investigators did not say why they suspect the five people they arrested. Officials would not comment on the investigation as they continue to work to identify additional suspects and witnesses to the homicide. The suspects were taken to the Ventura County Jail on Dec. 6. Lima and Martinez were being held without bail; Chaclan was being held in lieu of bail of $500,000, and bail for Patino is $100,000. No information is available on the juvenile suspect. - Nancy Needham |
