T.O. Kiwanis Club has full holiday schedule

A LIGHTED CHRISTMAS- - From left, Haze Arnold, Irish John Gore and Bob Rickards help Charlie Spardaro, right, install holiday lights at the Spardaro home on Clearview Street in Thousand Oaks. Arnold, Gore and Rickards are members of the Thousand Oaks Kiwanis Club.
The Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks, under new President Don Hegarty, is welcoming the holiday season with several community service events.

For the 22nd year in a row, the club will be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at three locations. They'll be ringing at the kettle on Saturdays, Dec. 15 and 22, with Kiwanians Swede Larson and Shannon Thomas leading the way. On Dec. 22, the club will compete with Simi Valley Kiwanis to see which group can raise the most money for the Salvation Army. The loser will treat the winning club to a steak and eggs breakfast.

Kiwanis will be out in force treating the young adults of Villa Esperanza to a Christmas brunch and a visit from Santa Claus on Sat., Dec. 15 at the Villa's home on Warwick Street in Thousand Oaks. Bud Larson, community events chair, will arrange the event, and all the residents will receive a present from Santa Claus.

Keeping the Kiwanis busy on weekends is the Meals on Wheels program, chaired by Barry Haskell. Every Saturday and Sunday members deliver more than a dozen warm meals to local homebound seniors.

The club will host its annual Christmas breakfast at the Thousand Oaks Inn on Wed., Dec. 19, when Santa Claus and the Gnome will treat Kiwanis family members to a holiday breakfast and all children attending to a holiday gift.

Last week, three T.O. Kiwanians installed Christmas lights at the Thousand Oaks home of Charlie Spadaro. He's 90 percent blind; his home was the only one on Clearview Street with no holiday lights. Members Bob Rickards, Irish John Gore and Haze Arnold took their extra lights and decorations and mounted them on the front of Spadaro's house. The result was a colorful array of lights, trees, candy canes, wreaths and icicles.

The Kiwanis Club meets at 7:15 a.m. every Wednesday at the Thousand Oaks Inn.

New and prospective members are always welcome.
