Deli lovers' delight
Brent's Deli in Westlake Village opened about a year ago with crowds lined up, looking as if they were waiting for the doors to open at the after-holiday sale at Macy's. Well, the crowds have eased, waits for tables have become manageable, and the staff is fully trained. Brent's has many things that set it apart from the rest, a warm "haimish" atmosphere with a new and hip look, great food, friendly service and a full bar with lounge. They have the best bus staff anywhere. As soon as you sit down they are there to get you drinks and a plate of pickles. The food: Where do I start? For breakfast try the Ron's Special Brunch with your choice of two eggs any style, choice of smoked fish, a ton of delicious potatoes, bagel and coffee all for $16.50, and there's plenty for two. The matzo ball soup is good, but if you want a real treat, try the cabbage soup with loads of tender meat that will melt in your mouth. Sandwiches are large, and you can't beat the thinly sliced corn rye. My favorites are the corned beef or the black pastrami and chopped liver sandwich. Last week I went with a friend who said Brent's has the greatest burgers. Never really thinking about having a burger at a deli, I tried the patty melt, and he was right. It was great. For dinner try the chicken in the pot, the hot brisket plate or, if you really want to experience deli, the Super Buffet for two with corned beef, pastrami, brisket, chopped liver, turkey and Swiss cheese. Served with cole slaw, both potato and cucumber salads and two cups of matzo ball soup, there is enough to have leftovers for another full meal the next day. If you have any room left for dessert, try a blackand-white cookie or the homemade cheesecake. This local family owned restaurant offers a good home-style meal with no pretentiousness. Daily hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Brent's Deli is at 2799 Townsgate Road, next to the Hyatt Westlake Plaza. For more information, call (805) 557-1882.
