'Learned Ladies' coming to Cal Lutheran

California Lutheran University's theater arts department will present Moliére's "The Learned Ladies (Les Femmes Savantes)" at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Nov. 1 through 11, in Preus-Brandt Forum at 60 W. Olsen Road in Thousand Oaks.

The 17th century satire has been adapted and translated by Freyda Thomas. The production is directed by theater arts professor Michael J. Arndt.

The comedy is set in a private salon of advanced learning in 1930s Paris.

"Moliére wrote his play critiquing the desire of society to pursue knowledge for its fashionable coinage," Arndt said. "In this contemporary adaptation, Moliere's critique, to me, fits the sometimes ivory tower world of academia, where not all knowledge results in learning and political correctness can sometimes blunt common sense."

Admission is $10 or free with CLU identification.
