High schools host science showcase nights this month

In an effort to better prepare students in science and technology, the Conejo Schools Foundation and the Conejo Valley Unified School District are hosting a science showcase night at each high school beginning next week.

Each night will kick off with an interactive panel made up of Superintendent Mario Contini, CSF president Pam Garvin, the school's science department chair, a professor from California Lutheran University, industry representatives and a student.

Discussions will be moderated by the school principals, and certain panel members will speak on what they do and what they look for in people they hire. The goal is to make a connection between science and technology in schools and in the real world.

The group will discuss whether the schools are delivering the science and technology that will be helpful in college and career.

After the forum, tours and demonstrations of the high schools' labs and other facilities will be given, followed by a dessert reception.

The showcases, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in each school's performing arts center, will take place at Westlake High on Wed., Oct. 17; at Newbury Park High on Thurs., Oct. 18; and at Thousand Oaks High on Mon., Oct. 22.
