Mount McKinley etchings on display at Cal Lutheran

John Solem's artwork exhibit, "The McKinley Suite: Encounter with the Sacred," will be on display from Oct. 5 through Nov. 13 in Overton Hall at California Lutheran University, 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks.

An opening reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 5. At 7:30 p.m., Solem will present an illustrated narrative of his climb. Admission is free.

"Blue Galaxy Iris: Connecting with Beauty and Nature's Rhythm," a 2007 book featuring Solem's artwork and the poems of J.T. Ledbetter, emeritus English professor, will be available for purchase.

Solem began teaching printmaking and etching at Cal Lutheran in 1966. That same year, he took a Sierra Club Mountaineering Training Course and began mountain climbing. He created "The McKinley Suite" of 12 etchings after climbing Mount McKinley in 1976. Solem retired in 1995.

Overton Hall, on Memorial Parkway on the campus, is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
