Other local football matchups

JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers HOT PURSUIT- Atascadero ball carrier Nick Tenhaeff is wrapped up by Thousand Oaks' Mitchell Korey as Frank Anaya converges.
Westlake (1-1) vs.

NPHS (2-0) at

Hart of Newhall (2-0)

Oak Park (2-0)

Outlook: If Friday night belongs to Oaks Christian vs. St. Bonaventure, then Thursday night is all about Newbury Park facing off against Oak Park.

Both teams' defenses have been firing on all cylinders early on. It's tough to give either squad an edge in this matchup.

Offensively, Oak Park has been unstoppable on the ground. The Eagles have rushed for 623 yards in two games and are averaging 44.5 rushing attempts per contest. OPHS has six players who have five or more rushing attempts.

Newbury Park quarterback Colby Cameron hasn't had a breakout performance to date, but running back Chris Brown has been as good as advertised.

Outlook: A pair of perennial powers will meet once again as Westlake takes on Hart of Newhall at College of the Canyons.

A year ago, en route to a 12-1 overall record, Westlake defeated Hart 28-27 in a dramatic game at Warrior Stadium.

Behind a twoheaded quarterback rotation that features senior Nick Owens and junior Ben Conlin, WHS will look to get back in the win column this week after suffering a tough, final-second loss to Saugus last Friday night.

Hart has looked good during victories over Moorpark and Bishop Amat. Westlake must contain running back Delano Howell and quarterback B.R. Holbrook if they want to pull the upset.

Last week's top performers

John Lister, RB, TOHS: The junior running back rushed for 141 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown as Thousand Oaks lost to Atascadero 14-11 at home in Week 2.

Newbury Park defense: The Panthers held Rio Mesa's offense to 80 total yards (34 rushing, 36 passing) during a 15-7 slugfest win.

Cooper Shockley, RB, Westlake: Shockley ran for 78 yards and a pair of scores as Westlake lost a 33-28 heartbreaker to Saugus. On the final play of regulation, Saugus scored on a 46-yard pass.

Ian Shultis, QB, TOHS: Shultis completed 23-of-35 passes for 263 yards against Atascadero.
