The fight against polio isn't over I'm writing to inform the public of the "We're Still Here Campaign," which will be observed Oct. 14 through 20. PostPolio Health International (www.post-polio.org) is calling on polio survivors to let the whole word know that poliomyelitis isn't yet completely eradicated. Currently there are 20 million survivors making great contributions, along with having great needs. Polio flattened me when I was 2 years old. I was able to recover and return to a normal lifestyle. Now, at age 53, I'm dealing with post-polio syndrome, as are many other survivors. There are many post-polio support groups available to help support and educate people in this area. The support group that I attend is the East Ventura County PostPolio Support Group. We support complete global poliovirus eradication, along with comprehensive healthcare and education for polio survivors. "I'm Still Here" and would like to remind people that we're still at risk. We can all make a difference toward equal opportunity and accessibility for all citizens around the world. Melodee Cane Thousand Oaks |
