Why the favorable treatment for day laborers? Regarding Nancy Needham's Sept. 6 article "Homeless campers create conflict in Thousand Oaks," I can fully understand the concern by residents and surrounding retailers in the Hillcrest Drive and Moorpark Road area were some of the unfortunate homeless are camping out and have appeared to be publicly inebriated, participating in lewd acts, alcohol theft from the nearby stores, etc. But my jaw dropped with the quotes and responses made by T.O. City Councilmember Dennis Gillette, who apparently is looking into this matter. Gillette was quoted in the article as stating, "It's a tough call when people are outside of the mainstream of the community." He also said the city currently has no plans to build the illegal campers a place of their own with flowers, picnic tables and restrooms as they did for day laborers. It's unbelievably offensive to me how Gillette refers to these American citizen homeless as "illegal" campers and has no plans to help them, while at the same time he has absolutely no problem spending $100,000 of our tax moneys each year to maintain his precious day laborer site so that "illegal" aliens, who have violated our nation's federal immigration laws, can openly seek employment. I call out Councilmember Gillette to please explain his logic. Dawn Williams Thousand Oaks |
