Home Depot not a good neighbor Let's be rational; an eyesore is not a valid reason for bringing in a Home Depot. What you really want is a good neighbor who won't be subject to numerous civil cases for code and environmental violations. In June 2006, Connecticut's Department of Environmental Protection reached a $425,000 settlement with Home Depot for numerous violations of environmental regulations at its stores in the state. The violations found at 13 Home Depot stores in Connecticut involved the improper display, handling and disposal of products, such as pesticides and fertilizers, which contain hazardous materials. Home Depot was also cited on a statewide basis for failing to comply with the state's hazardous waste, pesticide and stormwater management programs. Home Depot recently settled with Los Angeles County for similar violations, including the failure to properly transport hazardous sludge. This is just the tip of the iceberg. When you look at the conceptual site plan, the area for any type of outdoor material storage is at the back of the store below Foothill Drive where homes are located. On either side of the site, you'll find a child day-care center and a medical care facility residence. Since Home Depot has a history of environmental violations, why would you permit them to endanger children, our seniors and a residential neighborhood? Robert Pisapia Westlake Village |
