Boat race requires ingenuity, doubles as public service project

During a July weekend event in Ventura Harbor, 10 teams of about 10 kids each participated in the Shark Bait Invitational Boat Race.

Each team was given two large pieces of cardboard, two rolls of duct tape and silicone spray. They had 30 minutes to design and construct a boat using those materials before racing it to and from a buoy.

The boat race and conference were conducted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Newbury Park. More than 160 youths and 40 chaperones participated. It was an opportunity to learn about teambuilding and service activities.

The young people also visited local seniors and families in need to provide services such as housecleaning and yardwork.
