Alternative fuels the highest priority of auto companies

      The Ventura County Fire Department will conduct community meetings in Simi Valley and Ojai to inform the public and answer questions on the "Ventura County Wildfire Action Plan: Evacuate Early or Stay and Defend." Meetings have already been held in Thousand Oaks and Camarillo.

      The city of Thousand Oaks still has openings for free screenings, for those ages 60 and older, that could help them take action to prevent a stroke. The ultrasound test that looks at the carotid arteries and peripheral arteries is painless and can be done in minutes.

      The city is seeking residents to serve on the Social Services Ad Hoc Committee. Committee members convene twice a year to evaluate projects and provide funding recommendations. Up to 11 openings are available. Work ends in September 2008 or when it's completed.

Home break-ins up in Thousand Oaks
      A rise in the number of home burglaries between January and June in Thousand Oaks, Moorpark and Ojai drove a countywide 19 percent increase in residential break-ins, according to a recent report released by the Ventura County Sheriff 's Department.

$2 million sound wall approved in consent calendar
      A $2-million project to build a sound wall at the intersection of the 101 Freeway and Wendy Drive in Newbury Park was unanimously approved by City Council. The 4-0 vote, with Mayor Andy Fox absent, was taken during the consent calendar portion of the July 24 council meeting.
