Let's stop the mansionization of Thousand Oaks I've happily lived in Thousand Oaks for over 30 years and am now concerned that the integrity of our community might be threatened. Many of us choose Thousand Oaks for our homes because we enjoy the natural beauty of the community and the high building standards which the city maintains. I'm afraid that some of these standards are now in need of our protection. I'd like to share some information with the community about a precedent-setting development proposal in the neighborhood of Conejo Oaks. Plans have been submitted to demolish an existing home, subdivide and build two enormous houses. The first house is set at 4,701 square feet and the second at 10,480 square feet. The total square footage for this development would be 15,181 square feet for a 0.78-acre lot. This is part of a trend that could affect us all. Although this proposal has somehow made it through the first steps of the planning process, it's in violation of city ordinances and the general philosophy of Thousand Oaks. Thousand Oaks has a "mansionization" ordinance to protect us from exactly this type of development. As a community we must insist that builders comply with our existing law's voice. By chipping away at our standards we could lose some of the qualities that make T.O. so precious to us.
If it's important to you to maintain the integrity of
our community, please consider participating. Contact the planning commission,
write a letter or attend the July 23 planning commission meeting in which this
proposal will be addressed. | |||||
