A 2005 car crash that left Westlake High School graduate Brady Kelman with a broken femur, sternum, shoulder and back apparently left his funny bone intact.
The 24-year-old has left the world of high finance and a salary that lured him away from college and is trying his best to become a successful comedian.
He's already performed at popular comedy clubs in Southern California- the Comedy Store, Improv and the Ice House- where other young comics have hit it big after drawing crowds to their standup performances.
"It was comedy that got me through after the accident," he said. "It was the only thing that kept me sane."
Kelman was in the hospital for weeks and endured three back surgeries, from which he is still recovering, he said.
After high school the former football and basketball player attended college in Tempe, Ariz., studying business and finance. He came home in the summer to work. The money he made early on at that summer job provided him with a new Mercedes-Benz but took away one of his reasons for an education. Instead of returning in the fall, he dropped out of college and went for the cash, he said.
Then he was in a car crash.
During his long recovery, Kelman had time to ponder. He started to rethink his priorities and decided he wanted to make people laugh.
"I love to entertain people," he said.
So he wrote some material and began a six-week run at Blue Bar in Agoura Hills, he said.
The Westlake Village resident found comedy clubs would also give him a shot. They liked him, and he's been invited back.
Kelman's description of his comedy style: "Don't bring your children. I like, I really like, to talk about sex. I bash religion and talk about current events. It's what people relate to."
Upcoming Brady Kelman performances are scheduled for July 21at Embarcadero Hall at Isla Vista in Santa Barbara, July 22 at the Icehouse in Pasadena, July 27 at The Sportsman in Camarillo and Aug. 11 at The Comedy Store in Hollywood.
